1997 Tiebreaker Round (Individual)

Individual Rounds in the Math Masters Competitions are timed (10 minutes), and calculators are allowed.

1. What number is halfway between 3.4 and 7 3/5 on the number line? Give answer as a decimal.


2. The students in Mrs. Jackson's class are evenly spaced around a circle.
Each student has a partner directly opposite him or her.
They count off in order, beginning with number 1.
The student who says 6 is directly opposite the student who says 13. How many students are in the class?
3. Twenty-two clothespins are pinned to a straight clothes line at 2-foot intervals. To the nearest foot, how far apart are the first and last clothespins?
4. Abe, Brenda, Kadoon, and Luis went to the pool to swim laps.
Kadoon swam 8 more laps than Abe.
Brenda swam twice as many laps as Luis.
Luis swam 10 laps less than Kadoon.
Brenda swam 16 laps.
How many laps did Abe swim?
5. Sylvia has exactly $1.00 in change. She has at least one penny, one nickel, one dime, and one quarter. She does not have any half dollars. What is the least number of coins she could have?
6. Evaluate:

7. A flag pole at the local school casts a shadow 9 feet 8 inches long. At the same time Mr. Schaal's shadow is 3 feet 2 inches long. If Mr Schaal is 6 feet 3 inches tall, how tall is the flag pole to the nearest foot?
8. Sam's hourly wage increased by 20%, which was an increase of $0.90 per hour. What was his original hourly wage?
